"Thinergy" is the second episode of Fox's hit comedy show, "Married... with Children". It was written by Michael G. Moye and Ron Leavitt and originally aired on April 12, 1987.

Plot

Since Al enjoys himself watching an obscene show called "Patsy: Portrait of a Stewardess in Training", Peggy feels like he doesn't find her attractive anymore. Marcie then convinces her to get on a diet called "Thinergy: For Thinness and Energy" with Al on the pretext that it has improved her sex life with Steve.

When Peggy greets the family with an all-salad dinner, Al is infuriated and refuses to join the diet. However, Steve advises him to endure the diet for at least one week, so he can then convince Peggy to get out of it together.

After two days, both are tired of the diet, but refuse to acknowledge it. Finally, one night, Al lures Peggy into thinking he'll sleep with her but instead feeds her an eclair to make her break the diet. He then assures her that he still loves her and finds her pretty, by comparing her to an old baseball glove he had when he was a kid. The episode closes in with them kissing.

Popular and Cultural References

* The show that Al watches, "Patsy: Portrait of a Stewardess in Training", mentions a character called Bosley, which might might be a reference to the "Charlie's Angels" character that's usually surrounded by women.
* When Steve reprimands Al for watching an obscene show in front of his wife, Al defends himself saying it's their "God-given right... Since when do we have to apologize for that?" to what Steve replies "I think since the 70s". This might be a reference to the popularity of the feminist movement that started in the 60s and peaked the following decade.
* Marcie describes Steve as her "little Mount St. Helens" when telling Peggy of how they have sex every 36 hours.
* Peggy sings "I'm in the Mood for Love" while getting the room ready for the night.
* Al asks Peggy if she wants to watch "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" where Charles Nelson Reilly will be guest-starring.
* Peggy sings several songs that Al hates to get him riled up. Among them are: "Honey" from Bobby Goldsboro, and "Dominique" from Soeur Sourire.
* Al talks about how modern baseball gloves doesn't work as well as old gloves because they are too big. In doing so, he references the 1986 American League playoffs where "a lot of fly-balls were popping out of gloves, for home runs". He says that "that would've never happened to Willie Mays".
