William Allen Stewart

The Rt Rev.William Allen Stewart was a Bishop of Taunton whose brief tenure from June 1997 until March 1998 [“Priests and Prelates: The Daily Telegraph Clerical Obituaries” Beeson, T (Ed) London Continuum 2002 ISBN 9780826481009] was one of the shortest in the Anglican Communion. He was also at 6 feet 7 inches [ 201 centimetres] one of its tallest. Born on 19 September 1943 he was educated at Uppingham and Trinity College, Cambridge [“Who was Who”1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 071363457X] . Ordained in 1969 he was a curate at Eccleshall then Cheltenham [Crockford's clerical directory Lambeth, Church House, 1976 ISBN 0108153674] . Following this he was Vicar of "St James, Gloucester" [ [http://www.saintjamesgloucester.org.uk/ Church web site (1)] ] then Rector of "St Mary Magdalene, Torquay" [ [http://www.stmarymagtq.org.uk/ Church web site (2)] ] . A sideways move to "St Mark, Oulton Broad" [ [http://www.suffolkchurches.co.uk/oultonbmark.html Church web site (3)] ] led to promotion to be Rural Dean of Lothingland and finally, before his elevation to the Episcopate, a Canon of Norwich Cathedral. He died on 24 March 1998.
