Commonwealth Games 2010 India
In 2010, the Pakistan Olympic Association had decided that Shujauddin Malik, the 2006 CWG gold medalist for weightlifting, would carry the Pakistani flag and lead the team in the opening ceremony of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. However, Mohammad Ali Shah snatched the flag from Shujauddin Malik minutes before the ceremony and marched ahead as live TV coverage still indicated that Shujauddin Malik was carrying the flag.
The weightlifting team manager, Rashid Mehmood, revealed to Geo TV that Dr. Shah had told Malik that it was his right to lead the contingent based on seniority and had threatened to send the weightlifter home if he protested Shah's decision.[1] As a result, the weightlifting team, led by Mehmood, threatened to quit unless Dr. Shah apologized to the contingent, but were stopped by CWG officials.[2]
Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani has announced that he will have the matter investigated.[3]
