governing_body = City of Los Angeles Dept. of Recreation & ParksShadow Ranch is a historic ranch house, partly adobe and partly redwood, built from 1869-1872 on the original Albert Workman Ranch. The ranch began as a wheat farm owned by Isaac Van Nuys. Albert Workman was the superintendent of Van Nuys' Los Angeles Farm and Milling Company, and after 1869, Workman purchased the 9,000 acre ranch himself, cultivating another 4,000 acres nearby. The ranch also had a thousand head of cattle at one time. [cite web|title=Shadow Ranch - William Workman Residence|publisher=City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks|url=http://www.lacity.org/RAP/dos/historic/shadow.htm] Today, the ranch stands on 13 acres of the original ranch which are used as a city park and recreational facility. When the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission was formed in 1962, Shadow Ranch was one of the first ten properties to be designated as a city Historic-Cultural Monument (HCM #9).
