"Came the Brawn" is a 1938 "Our Gang" short comedy film directed by Gordon Douglas. It was the 165th "Our Gang" short (166th episode, 77th talking short, and 78th talking episode that was released.

Plot

Initially, fickle Darla declared that she would not go out with neighborhood bully Butch until he started behaving like a gentleman. This week, however, Darla is ga-ga over "muscle men" in general and self-styled wrestler Alfalfa in particular. Thanks to the machinations of his manager Spanky, "Wildcat" Alfalfa is set to defend his championship title in a fixed bout against the "Masked Marvel"--in reality, the wimpy Waldo. But what Alfalfa doesn't know is that a revenge-seeking Butch has traded places with Waldo. As he prepares to mop up the floor with the helpless Alfalfa, Butch is defeated through the trickery of Buckwheat and Porky -- but this time, both Alfalfa and Butch are losers when it comes to Darla. cite web |url=http://movies.nytimes.com/movie/225697/Came-the-Brawn/overview |title=New York Times: Came the Brawn |accessdate=2008-09-21|work=NY Times]

Notes

Came the Brawn marked Spanky McFarland's, Tommy "Butch" Bond's, Sidney "Woim" Kinrick's, and "darwood "Waldo" Kaye's final appearance in Hal Roach's "Our Gang" series. Butch, Woim, and Waldo were recurring characters and would not be needed for the last three episodes but would all return for the first MGM episode Little Ranger.

Spanky, however, was on loan to other studios and was on a 6 month leave and would not be seen on either the final three Hal Roach episodes or the first two MGM Our Gang episodes, when they would be set in a fictitious town called "Greenpoint". Spanky would return to Our Gang from this loan several months after it was purchased by MGM later in the year. He would remain another four and a half years.
