Conceived by local tattoo artist J.J. Ortiz and his brother in-law Christopher Martinez, 805 ink is not your typical
tattoo parlor that most first think of. Instead of a traditionaltattoo parlor with black and white checker flooring, 805 ink is a body art boutique that provides high quality custom tattoos and body piercing but also sells premium clothing and merchandise for its customers. The sleek interior of the shop has a lounge with flat screen TVs, couches and free Wi-Fi that attracts, and welcomes, patrons of all backgrounds.Giving Back
In addition to 805 ink, J.J. Ortiz and Christopher Martinez find it important to give back to their community. J.J. Ortiz, a first generation
Mexican American , was born and raised inGoleta ,California . Growing up in the Villa Esperanza Housing Complex for low income families, J.J. remembers and understands what it is like for troubled teens. In addition to 805 ink, J.J. Ortiz is the Co-Founder of the “Turf to Surf” program with Manny Raya. The "Turf to Surf" program mentors at-risk youth inSanta Barbara ,California by teaching them how to surf in a two week summer program. The “Turf to Surf” program has been featured onESPN , KEYT,Santa Barbara Independent , and theSanta Barbara News Press . Additionally, J.J. was also named a local hero by Santa Barbara Magazine.Martinez, also from
Santa Barbara ,California started of a non-profit inWest Oakland ,California that works with at-risk youth and their families in a variety of educational and social programs. In 1998, he received a Student Life Achievement Award fromUC Berkeley for his work with the local community, and in 1999 he received the national Michael Schwerner Activist Award from The Gleitsman Foundation in recognition of promoting positive solutions for social change. Also in 1999, Martinez received the Donald A. Strauss Fellowship for his community work inOakland ,California . Martinez was also a former participant on the Grant Selection Committee for the Hutton Foundation inSanta Barbara ,California .References
