Gary O'Toole

Gary O'Toole

Gary O'Toole, M.D., is a retired Irish Olympic swimmer. He represented Ireland at the Seoul, and Barcelona Games.

While studying at University College Dublin [http://www.beaconclinic.ie/users/profile/24/practice:25/ Gary O'Toole] ] , O'Toole won a 200 m breaststroke silver medal at the 1989 European Long Course Championships in Bonn . He helped to break 5 National relay records, including Short Course and Longcourse [ [http://www.swimireland.ie/index.cfm/loc/6-10 Irish Records] ] .

As a prominent member of the Irish Amateur Swimming Association, O'Toole had been approaced to make representations on behalf of the victims of the George Gibney scandle [ [http://www.independent.ie/national-news/the-drowning-of-the-truth-454176.html "The Drowning of the Truth"] ] . Gibney, who coached O'Toole up until he became aware of these allegations, criticised O'Toole publicly during the 1992 Olympics. His complaints were ignored, and led to a major investigation into the incidents and ultimately to the disbandment of the IASA, and the creation of Swim Ireland [ [http://www.independent.ie/unsorted/features/sexabuse-swim-coach-for-release-next-month-121988.html Swim Ireland move to prevent early release] ] .

Since his retirement from professional swimming, O'Toole has been a practising Orthopedic surgeon, although he does provide analysis for RTÉ Sport's Olympic swimming coverage [ [http://www.rte.ie/sport/olympics2008/tvradioschedule.html RTÉ's Olympic TV coverage] ] .
