Thorogood, who is 5 ft 9 in (1.75 m) tall, competed in the national beauty pageant Miss Venezuela 1999 and obtained the title of Miss Venezuela. Also won the special awards of Miss Internet and Miss Integral. She represented the Miranda state at the contest.
Martina Thorogood was sent to the Miss world, instead of Miss Universe where winners of Miss Venezuela are sent. This was due to reapeated shocking exclusions of few previous Miss Venezuela World.Thorogood was the official representative of Venezuela to the Miss World 1999 pageant held in London, United Kingdom on December 4, 1999, where she finished as the First Runner-up to the eventual winner, India's Yukta Mookhey.[1][2] She was denied for Miss Universe 2000, as she was First Runner-Up in Miss World and as of rules runner-up replaces winner if anything happens to her.
