Stoel Rives LLP is a large U.S. law firm based in Portland, Oregon which is best known for its expertise in environmental law. According to the National Law Journal's 2007 rankings, it is the 133rd largest law firm in the United States, making it the largest law firm in the state of Oregon, and one of the largest in the Northwestern United States.

The firm also ranked 157th in profit per attorney on the 2007 AmLaw 200 survey.

History

Stoel Rives traces its lineage back to the Portland-based firm of Davies, Biggs, Strayer, Stoel and Boley, which was founded in 1907. In 1979, this firm merged with another large Portland firm, Rives, Bonyhadi and Smith, which had been founded in 1935. In 1987, the firm acquired the Seattle-based Jones, Grey and Bayley (founded 1912). The firm expanded into Boise, Idaho in 1991, and into Salt Lake City, Utah in 1992, before absorbing the San Francisco, California-based firm of Washburn, Briscoe & McCarthy in 2001.

Practice areas

Stoel Rives has a broad-based environmental law practice, which includes air quality, water quality and water rights, occupational safety and health, toxic torts, renewable energy, hydroelectric projects, Superfund sites and underground storage tanks, and issues under the Endangered Species Act and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. The firm also has practices in corporate law, antitrust, mergers & acquisitions, securities litigation, trusts and estates, professional responsibility, tax law, labor & employment, real estate, construction law, intellectual property, health law, , and legal issues relating to Native Americans.
