Philadelphia ,Pennsylvania to Huntsville,Alabama in1981 prior to starting second grade. In1992 , as a senior at Huntsville High School, West won the men's "Jimmy Bailey High Point Award" for scoring the most points in the city's 1992 City Championship track & field meet, winning the110m high hurdles , the300m intermediate hurdles , thehigh jump , and the4x100 m relay .
