- Paulo pilha
Paulo Paquito Paçoca de Pilha (born Paulo de Pilha) is a musician from Rio de Janeiro and animal rights activist. He was born in 1983 — heir to Duracel batteries empire fortune — in Leblon, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
From an early age Pilha showed great talent for music. Pilha began his musical career in 1986, only 3 years old, as a member of the Duracel Bunnys (a clear reference to his family’s brand name). By the age of 8 he was heavily addicted to toxic substances such as crack, sucrose and heroin, which eventually led him to a 6 year rehab retreat in Arizona where he would meet his greatest artistic influence ever: Greg Graffin.
He first appeared in public with Iron Maiden, playing drums at their notorious first gig at Help Disco in Rio’s Copacabana beach. According to the Documentary “Pilhado”, Paulo, along with long time friend Beto Betinho, was considered for the position of lead singer for Bad Religion, but failed to show up for the audition leading Graffin to end his long time relationship with him.
A brief affair with top-model Giselle Bundchen in 2001 folllowed by a very public breakup, marks the turning point on Pilha’s musical career. “I was born again”, words from the artist himself referring to his self discovery phase that led him to write emo-generation anthems like “Sindrome do Coitadismo” amongst others.
He is often credited for leading the revival of emo punk rock during the late 2000s, as well as influencing a large number of other punk and rock musicians throughout their career.
To date, Pilha hasn’t released studio albums, a clear statement on his rebellious against the corporate music industry. His single “Pedrão” has been regarded by some critics as one of the most important hardcore punk songs of all time, although it was not charted around the globe.
He is particularly known for his hilarious lyrics and overall breath taking looks which have led him to work as a model for a brief period of time during the late 90’s. Some have said him to be the sexiest musician alive although there are groups who contest this referring to “The Hoff” as a more likely artist to cause impact amongst middle aged groups.
