- Gaylord K. Swim
Gaylord K. Swim (1948-2005) was the founder of the
Sutherland Institute and a prominent business man and community leader.Biography
Swim was a native of
Carmel, California . He attendedPomona College and then transfered toBrigham Young University . He joined theChurch of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints while a student at BYU. In 1970 he graduated with a BS in business. He then served a mission for the church in the Germany Central Mission (latter the Germany Dusseldorf Mission). After his return from his mission he earned an M.A. in political science from BYU. In 1973 Swim married Lauralyn Bankhead in theSalt Lake Temple .The Swims had a total of five children.
Early on Swim worked for
Dominick and Dominick . He latter established the company that becamePillar Capital Investors . He also was a co-founder of theRural Health Management Corporation .In the LDS Church Swim served in various positions including as a bishop and a counselor in a stake presidency.
Besides his role as the founder of the
Sutherland Institute , Swim also served as a member of the board of theCouncil for National Policy .Swim also served on the board of the
Deseret International Foundation andEnterprise Mentors .Swim died of brain cancer at the age of 56.
