Frank Twiss

Frank Twiss

Sir Frank Roddam Twiss (7 July 1910–1994) was a Royal Navy admiral and Second Sea Lord who banned the naval rum ration. He went on to serve as Black Rod.

During World War II he was Gunnery Officer of HMS Exeter. The Exeter was badly damaged during the Second Battle of the Java Sea leading to the Captain gaving the order to abandon ship. Twiss was captured and was a Japanese prisoner of war for three years.

During this time he suffered from malnutrition, dysentery and beri-beri, not to mention the severe and inhumane treatment of the Japanese. He returned to the United Kingdom following his release after the Japanese surrender in 1945.
