Institute for Biodiagnostics

The National Research Council Institute for Biodiagnostics (NRC-IBD) is a research laboratory located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It was established in 1992 to develop noninvasive medical devices and techniques and to increase prospects for prevention, earlier diagnosis, improved treatment and prognosis of diseases.

It employs 200 people and is adjacent to the University of Winnipeg campus in Downtown Winnipeg. The impact on Winnipeg's economy amounts to $30 million a year. In 2005, the lab expanded to a second building of 40,000 square feet where the NRC Centre for the Commercialization of Biomedical Technology (NRC-CCBT) took up quarters.

The early history of the NRC lab in Winnipeg was not an auspicious one. Shortly after that lab was built in 1984, it was shuttered by the government of Brian Mulroney. At that time, the lab was called NRC Institute for Manufacturing Technology. It later became the Canadian Institute for Industrial Technology before becoming the Institute for Biodiagnostics.
