General Sir William Henry Bartholomew GCB CMG DSO ADC (General) (16 March 1877 –31 December 1962 ) was a BritishGeneral during theSecond World War and formerColonel Commandant to theRoyal Artillery .Army career
Commissioned into the Royal Regiment of Artillery on
23 March 1897 as aSecond Lieutenant , Bartholomew rose through the ranks to becomeLieutenant General on13 February 1933 . He was appointed to the rank ofGeneral on19 February 1937 during his time as Chief of the General Staff inIndia . His final post in theBritish Army before retirement on8 June 1940 was as General Officer Commanding, Central Northern Command.After the Army
In retirement, Bartholomew served as North Eastern Regional Commissioner for Civil Defence between
1940 and1945 . He had served asAide-de-camp General to the King between26 April 1938 and8 June 1940 and Colonel Commandant to the Royal Artillery on20 June 1934 .ee also
