Retroviral readthrough element
- Retroviral readthrough element
The Retroviral readthrough element is an RNA structure that is shown to facilitate the mechanism of translation readthrough of the stop codon of the gag-pol junction producing the gag and pol fusion protein in certain retrovirus.
The retroviral RTE contain a pseudoknot structure situated 3' to the gag stop codon. The RNA structure was predicted and comfirmed by mutagenesis. [cite journal| title= Pseudoknot-dependent read-through of retroviral gag termination codons: importance of sequences in the spacer and loop 2 | id = PMID 8076609] .The Rfam structure is based on a covariation model.
