Plot summary
The book consists of three short stories.
In the first story, Sonu ka Bagicha(Sonu's Garden), Sonu and his mother go to a garden shop. Sonu is searching for a nice flower to plant in his garden. He goes through a succession of flowers, rejecting all of them for one reason or another, until he comes across the marigold plants which he likes.
The second story, Sonu ki gend(Sonu's ball) has Sonu playing with a ball which gets stuck in a drainage pipe. The different adults living and working around Sonu, such as his neighbors, the gardener, the fireman, the cable man, the electrician try different means of getting the ball out, but fail to do so. Finally, Sonu gets the ball out using his own ingenuity.
The third story, Sonu ka Safar(Sonu's trip), has Sonu going out for a sleep-over. He decides to walk over to his friend's house instead of driving over with his mother. He is stopped multiple times by neighbors and strangers who are baffled by the sight of a boy walking with a sleeping bag. Finally, he is brought back home by a policeman, and needs to be dropped off for the sleep-over in a car.
Characters
The main character in the book is Sonu, who is a boy of indeterminate age. Sonu lives with his mother, who is not identified by any name other than Mummy.
