"SAMPURNA" (The overall development) is a non-profit development organization working for the vulnerable children and women. It is ideologically based on the UN declaration of progress of Nation i.e. “The day will come when the progress of nations will be judged not by their military or economic strength, not by the splendor of their capital cities and public buildings, but by the well being of their peoples and by their levels of health, nutrition and education, by the opportunities to earn a fair reward for their labours, by their ability to participate in the decisions that affect their lives, by the provision that is made for those who are vulnerable and disadvantaged and by the protection that is afforded to the growing minds and bodies of their children”. It is towards this holistic development that SAMPURNA works. It encompasses a multitude of programme with various initiatives in education, health economic empowerment. SAMPURNA is working in Ranga Reddy & Hyderabad districts with the most vulnerable women in prostitution for promotion of reproductive and sexual health of women. SAMPURNA also works for the community based rehabilitation of the differently abled and mentally challenged children and vulnerable women in twin city slums of Hyderabad. We look forward to collaboration and support of likeminded individuals for co-ordinated efforts to alleviate at human miseries.

Projects undertaken

India Population Project-VIII:-SAMPURNA has implemented this project from 1998 to 2001 in 40 slums of Hyderabad in collaboration with MCH-Hyderabad. It has trained over 400 grass root level leaders on basic and reproductive health and empowered them to utilize the services from the Urban Health Posts in Hyderabad. These grass root level leaders acted as the link between UHP and community in better utilization of services from the UHPs. They have motivated number of men and women for adopting temporary and permanent family methods. The main achievement of the project is people in the slums are demanding services from UHPs and ensuring service providers to provide services regularly. Key outcome • Increased institutional deliveries, Immunisation of Pregnant women and Children resulting in reduced IMR & MMR.• Sustained demand generation through Mahila Arogya Sanghas in the Slums

Under the same project SAMPURNA has started 6 play schools in the areas where there is no access to primary schooling. Later these schools were linked under National Child Labour Project and District Primary Education Programme (DPEP) with MAHITA as the consultant organization. SAMPURNA is still running 3 schools at Kaladera, Mumthaz colony and Harijan basti slums with the main objective of mainstreaming the potential child labour into formal education. It has mainstreamed more than 300 children from these slums in the past three years.

Rehabilitation of the Child Labour: In collaboration with Care Foundation for the Children and Aging (CFCA) SAMPURNA has identified 200 potential child labours from four slums, Kamalnagar, Harijanbasti, Nazeerbagh and Ratnanagar. It is supporting these children for their education by mainstreaming them into some of the best schools. Parents of these sponsored children are formed into self-help groups to keep them together and focused on continued education to their children. This is ongoing programme and it has plans to expand this programme to 200 more children by the end of the year 2005. Children are helped for their school fee, school dress and note books. This programme is totally transparent. The child and mother open with a Savings bank account, which will be jointly operated. Assistance is sent in the name of the child by cheque to avoid any mismanagement. Priority is given to destitute children and children affected & infected with AIDS. Outcome• 200 children from slums mainstreamed for education in the best private schools in the city.

Self-help Groups: SAMPUNRA has started over 100 SHGs in 40 slums of Hyderabad. It has more than 1500 members who are actively utilizing the services of these groups. These members have saved more than 10 lakhs and are helping each other to get rehabilitated. Many women have started Income generating activities like vegetable vending, kirana stores, milk centres and petty shops to become self-sufficient with the help of revolving fund received from the government. These groups are actively running even now with a turnover of over 20 lakhs per year.

SAMPURNA has established strong grass root level network with these self-help groups. Leaders and members act as the mediators between the community and service providers for the holistic development.Outcome• Strong network of empowered women• Increased decision making in the family with economic empowerment.

Rehabilitation of the disabled children:- With the help of Stitching Liliane Fonds, SAMPURNA is working for the rehabilitation of the disabled children. Children with disability are being helped for their education, surgery, aids and appliances, income generating projects and physiotherapy. Right now about 50 disabled children are undergoing the process of rehabilitation. Day care centre for the mentally challenged children has been initiated during the current year. It was started in the month of September 05. Fifteen children are regularly attending the Day care centre. Ms.Satyaviti, a qualified teacher is appointed as the teacher for the Day Care Centre. SLF has helped for the establishment cost of Day Care Centre. Transport facilities are provided for all the children by the mini van given by Stitching Liliane Fonds.

Skill training programme: - More than 100 adolescent girls who discontinued their studies have been trained in skill training programme such as Tailoring, beautician, DCA, DTP and Typing. All these girls are from the slums. Most of the trained girls have got jobs and have become self-employed. This programme was done in collaboration with Skills for Progress (SKIP) and IPP-VIII, Hyderabad in the year 2000-2002. This programme helped in making these girls independent and self-sustained.

Eco-friendly Vermi Composting:- Training in Vermi-composting has been done for the rural people for promoting sustainable agriculture in Karimnagar district. Ten farmers were trained in vermin composting. Six of them are continuing vermi composting and using it for their crops. This programme was done in collaboration with Skills for Progress (SKIP), Bangalore.

Play Schools:- Three play schools were started in Harijan Basti, Mumthaz colony and Kala Dera slums. These three play schools which were earlier supported under DPEP programme have been linked now with Sarva Siksha Abhiyan. So far more than 100 people have been mainstreamed into formal education during the past three years. 75 children are regularly attending these schools.

HIV Prevention:- With its vast experience and expertise in the health, the organization has taken up HIV prevention activities in the last year. Presently covering 3 mandals of Rangareddy district of AP. The primary objective is to empower the community to make them realize their rights and prevent HIV AIDS. SAMPURNA intends to empower the marginalized communities to demand services due to them both sexual and non sexual health which will help in reduction of vulnerability.
