Bukowski (surname)

Bukowski (surname)

Bukowski is a surname found in several Slavic languages: Polish, Belarusian, and Ukrainian. It is composed of the common Slavic word " [http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/buk buk-] " (common Slavic for "beech tree") and the Slavic suffixes "-ov" and "-ski". In some cases the name may originate from a toponym, i.e. the name would have been given to or adopted by a person or family from a place named Buków, for example Fact|date=September 2008.

In other cases the name may have been given to or was adopted by somebody who lived by a prominent beech tree, perhaps one used as a boundary marker; or to somebody who owned a beech wood or forest. Where the name is Jewish it was ornamental, and usually 18th century, and was one given to refugees fleeing Islamic persecution from areas under Turkish control or dominance. Ornamental surnames were widely adopted in for instance Scandinavia, Germany and Central Europe, because they were considered pleasantly descriptive.
