Major Richard William George Hingston ( 1887 - 8 August 1966) Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, was a physician, explorer and naturalist.[Anon (1966) Obituary: Major Richard William George Hingston, M. C. The Geographical Journal 132(4):598] ]He studied at Merchant Taylors School and went to University College in Cork. He joined the Indian Medical Service in 1910 and worked in East Africa, Mesopotamia and France. He was awarded the M.C. for his service. In 1924 he was part of the Mt. Everest Expedition and here he studied the effects of high altitude on the human body. In 1913 he travelled with the Indo-Russian Pamir Triangulation Expedition and joined as Surgeon-Naturalist in the Indian Marine survey between 1925 and 1927.[ ]He was elected to the Royal Geographical Society on 22 June 1922, proposed by Lt.-Col. WilliamsonOswald and seconded by J. Scott Keltie.[ ]He led several expeditions to Africa after his retirement in 1927. He wrote several books including "A naturalist in the Himalaya" (1920), "A naturalist in Hindustan" (1923) and "A naturalist in the Guiana forest" (1932).[ ]References
