- Li Gun
Li Gun (李衮) is a character in the "
Water Margin ".Li Gun was from Peixian. He wore a steel helmet, a suit of armour and carried a shield with a beast's head engraved on it. He was armed with a long sword and 24 javelins. Li Gun excelled in martial arts and could hit a target accurately with his javelins within a hundred steps. He did not hesistate in killing his enemies and was nicknamed 'Flying great sage' (飞天大圣).
Li Gun was a good friend of
Pan Rui and served as Pan's surbordinate on Mangdang Mountain along withXiang Chong . They had 3000 bandit troops under their command and proclaimed that they would one day conquerLiangshan .Song Jiang was furious upon hearing that and led the Liangshan heroes to attack Mangdang Mountain.Shi Jin volunteered to be the vanguard general to attack Mangdang Mountain but was defeated by Xiang Chong and Li Gun in the first battle.The next day,
Gongsun Sheng arranged the Liangshan troops into the Eight Trigrams Formation. Pan Rui attempted to break the formation with his magic powers while ordering his surbordinates to charge into the formation at the same time. Gongsun Sheng overpowered Pan Rui and defeated him. Li Gun and Xiang Chong found themselves lost inside the formation and eventually fell into a pit and were caught. Song Jiang treated them with respect and the two heroes were touched by Song Jiang's kindness. They went back to Mangdang Mountain and managed to persuade Pan Rui to join the Liangshan band.Li Gun became one of the leaders of the Liangshan infantry and
72 Earthly Warriors . After the heroes had obtained amnesty from the emperor, Li Gun followed them on their campaigns against theLiao Tartars and southern rebels, making great contributions. During theFang La campaign, Li Gun was assigned to attack Muzhou together with Xiang Chong. Li Gun chasedZheng Mojun but he fell into a stream accidentally and died under dozens of enemy arrows fired at him.
