Firm History
Goodman & Company, LLP (Goodman) was first founded in 1932 by M. Lu Goodman. Working along side D. Vernon Norman, the firm was originally known as Goodman, Norman & Company.
By the late sixties, Goodman had merged with the firm Berger & Wilson, and was officially renamed “Goodman & Company” to honor the then retired founding partner.
In 1978, Goodman merged with Bowman, Upton & Murphy and expanded its practice into Virginia Beach and Richmond, VA.
Recognizing that the Richmond market had a great deal of potential for a medium sized full service accounting firm, efforts were started to expand the practice to offer a broader range of services. This culminated in the merger with Levin and Rochkind in 1979.
Just after the 50th anniversary of Goodman & Company, the firm was recognized by the Tidewater Virginian as having “evolved into the largest independent accounting firm in the state”.
By the mid eighties, Aaron Rosen & Company merged with Goodman & Company, making Joan Aaron the first female partner of Goodman and expanding their presence into Newport News, VA.
From the late eighties well into the new millennium, Goodman & Company continued to merge with several companies including:
• Womack and Burke
• Erny & Mason
• Collins-Gregg Associates
