October 3 ,1938 ) is a Canadian novelist and short story writer.Born in the
Comox Valley ,British Columbia , he attended theUniversity of British Columbia , where he was encouraged byEarle Birney . He worked as a high school teacher of English inNanaimo , British Columbia, before taking a position at theUniversity of Victoria in the Creative Writing Department.Critically acclaimed, among his best received works is "Broken Ground" (1998), a
