- Jan Hendrik de Boer
Jan Hendrik de Boer (
March 19 1899 –april 25 1971 ) was a Dutchphysicist andchemist .De Boer was born in Ruinen, now
De Wolden , and died in's-Gravenzande . He studied at theUniversity of Groningen and was later employed in industry.Together with
Anton Eduard van Arkel , de Boer developed achemical transport reaction fortitanium ,zirconium , andhafnium . In a closed vessel the metal reacts withiodine at elevated temperature forming the iodide. At a tungsten filament of 1700 °C the reverse reaction occurs, and the iodine and the metal are set free. The metal forms a solid coating at the tungsten filament and the iodine can react with additional metal, resulting in a steady turnover.cite journal | title = Darstellung von reinem Titanium-, Zirkonium-, Hafnium- und Thoriummetall | journal = Zeitschrift für anorganische und allgemeine Chemie | volume = 148 | issue = 1 | year = 1925 | pages = 345–350 | first =A.
