Inanatomy , the splenic vein (in the past called the lienal vein) is theblood vessel that drainsblood from thespleen .It joins with the
superior mesenteric vein , to form thehepatic portal vein and follows a coursesuperior to thepancreas , alongside of the similarly named artery, thesplenic artery .It collects branches from the
stomach andpancreas and most notably from thelarge intestine , which is drained by theinferior mesenteric vein and joins with splenic vein shortly before it forms the portal vein.
