The Oblongs Plot
The Oblong family wakes up one morning, and youngest son Milo wants to be transferred from his "special" school (Granville) to the area public high school. Mr. Oblong is confronted at work about the many expensive insurance claims his family has made on their plan, and his boss Mr Climer issues an ultimatum: if Oblong makes one more claim, he'll be off the plan.
Milo's friends try to come up with ways to "accidentally" injure Milo so his parents won't be able to afford Granville, but ultimately Pickles knocks a tree on Biff and Chip with her car while lighting a new cigarette. Milo meets a "cute" girl at Valley High, Yvette, who is actually an alien. Milo tries to express his attraction to her, but the boys from the Hills beat him up and warn him to "stay away" from their women.
At the same time Bob stops defending his wife, worrying that if he is seriously injured they won't be able to afford medical care. Pickles consoles Milo and is touched by his feelings for Yvette, pointing out to Bob that he isn't afraid to do whatever it takes for the girl he loves. Yvette takes Milo to her "house", actually a barely disguised UFO and examines him, leaving an identifier tag on his nipple. The Hill boys beat him up again, but Milo decides to write Yvette a love letter, which Helga delivers in disguise when the Debbies have a tea party. The Hill boys find the letter and decide to set fire to Milo's treehouse, but are thwarted at the last minute by Mikey and a garden hose.
Yvette takes her flying car to the treehouse, and finding only ashes alerts the mother ship that her mission is complete. Her contact instructs her to self-terminate, noting that transport back to the ship is "not cost-effective". Yvette complies just as Milo is running up to see her, and is heartbroken. His friends and family interpret Yvette's death as a suicide, claiming she mistook the burning treehouse as a sign of his death. Milo pokes as Yvette's ashes as Bob tells his son that at least she will make a good fertilizer for the rosebushes.
Notes
* The WB's promotions used the line "Its okay to stare" to introduce the show.
* The Debbie-suit that Helga wears to infiltrate the tea party was used in Helga's story in the book Creepy Susie and thirteen other tales for troubled children.
* Angus Oblong wasn't involved with the show other than the theme song and the basic premise.
* This episode was first broadcast on Cartoon Network on August 4th, 2002.
* The original cut of this episode was 4 1/2 minutes too long, so to allow extra time, the opening segment was left out. Just to clarify, there isn't a longer version available. The makers realized that the pilot was running long, so un-needed scenes were trimmed and the longer version was never completed.
