Garuda Indonesia Flight 421 was a scheduled-domestic flight operated by Indonesian flag carrier Garuda Indonesia from Lombok to Yogyakarta. On January 16, 2002, the Boeing 737-300 aircraft used on the flight, experienced a flameout on both of its CFM International CFM56 engines. Unable to restart the engines, the pilots chose to ditch the aircraft into the Bengawan Solo River. Only one fatality was reported.
Ditching at Bengawan Solo
As Flight 421 attempted to land in Yogyakarta during a severe thunderstorm, both engines flamed out. In 1982, British Aiirways Flight 009 experienced the same problem, but managed to land safely at Jakarta. This time, the flightcrew did not attempt an emergency landing, but decided to ditch, instead, into a shallow part of the Bengawan Solo River. Only one fatality, a stewardess, was reported.
