Galland was born in
Brooklyn, New York and grew up inWashington Heights, Manhattan . She earned a degree in psychology fromHunter College . In 1945, while taking graduate classes in retailing atNew York University , she took a position atLord & Taylor . In 1950, she took a position at Bonwit Teller and rose in the ranks until leaving to be President ofWamsutta Trucraft Home Fashions in 1975. After returning to Bonwit Teller in 1980, she became President until 1983.
