Murnarr

Murnarr

Murnarr is a minor character from the “Hellblazer” comics, first appearing in the “Warped Notions” story arc between issues #85-#88. He is referred to by John Constantine as “the cat-demon”, and could be described as an anthropomorphic cat, approximately six feet tall, with human limb-structure but a furry feline face. He wears a suit, neck-scarf and tailored coat, which allows his long tail to move freely.

Murnarr initially appeared to Constantine along with the ghosts of Sir Francis Dashwood of the Hellfire Club, and a nameless mutilated goddess with no arms or eyes, in order to enlist his help in sealing the ruptured membrane between the realms of reality and imagined pseudo-realities [Hellblazer #85 (1995)] . Murnarr is well spoken but instinctively violent, capable of causing bloody mayhem when the situation suits, and is also partial to snacking on human flesh. He claims that “people have been eating each other for centuries … There is no natural aversion to it.”

Unlike the spirits that often visit Constantine, Murnarr can be seen by other humans; on a plane journey to Australia, he disguises his cattish face with a wide-brimmed hat and his scarf [Hellblazer #87 (1995)] .

Murnarr dies from severe injuries following a battle with the giant Rainbow Serpent. It is strongly implied that the death is the result of a curse laid upon him by an Aborigine [Hellblazer #87 (1995)] .
