Stephen Bowen is the current Dean and
CEO of Oxford College ofEmory University . Bowen received hisbachelor's degree in 1971 fromDepauw University , followed two years later by an M.A. from Indiana University. He earned his Ph.D. in 1976 fromRhodes University inGrahamstown, South Africa .Bowen's academic specialty is in the
ecology of fisheries, having published widely on diet and digestion in a number of aquatic species, nutritional value of several water-borne substances,DNA diversity in theGreat Lakes , and other subjects. He is a certified fisheriesbiologist by theAmerican Fisheries Society , and has received grants from theNational Science Foundation , the state ofMichigan , theGreat Lakes Fishery Commission , theUnited Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, among other agencies.Bowen is a senior fellow at the
American Association of Colleges and Universities . Beginning in 1978, he served as an assistantprofessor , department chair, associate dean, vice provost, interim provost, and finally in 2000 vice provost for instruction and distance learning atMichigan Technological University . In 2001, he became provost and vice president for academic affairs atBucknell University . On August 1, 2005, he came into his current position as Dean of Oxford College of Emory University.Bowen has been married to his wife Nancy since 1973. They have three children: Gabe, Matt, and April.
