Human leukocyte Interferon-alpha (HuIFN-alpha-Le) MultiferonTM is a natural interferon-alpha (IFN-ɑ) which is obtained from the leukocyte fraction of human blood following induction with Sendai virus. Multiferon contains several naturally occurring IFN-ɑ subtypes. Multiferon is highly purified by affinity chromatography

The manufacturing procedure for Multiferon necessitates the use of leukocytes from human blood donors. All donors have been tested and found to be negative in tests for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV). However, it still remains a possibility that occasional buffy coats used in the manufacturing procedure may contain these or other viruses. It is therefore of utmost importance that the purification process used for preparation of the final product can be shown to inactivate any possibly contaminating virus in the buffy coats or in any other materials used in the process.Extensive experiments on the virus inactivating ability of the process used for preparation of Multiferon show that this product carries no risk of transmitting any type of virus and therefore in this respect is safe for therapeutic use in humans.

The product is produced in Sweden by the pharmaceutical company Swedish Orphan [http://www.swedishorphan.com/en/Products--Therapy/] .

Differences between (Natrual) multi- sub type INF-ɑ and recombinant interferons.

Interferons approved on the market consist of several recombinant interferonalphas (IFN-ɑ) (IntronA®/PegIntron® and Roferon®/Pegasys®). (HuIFN-alpha-Le) human interferon alpha (INF-α) Multiferon is available in parts of Europe and the world. Recently the drug was approved in 2006 in Sweden for adjuvant treatment of Malignant Melanoma in stage IIB-III * [http://pdfserve.informaworld.com/Pdf/AddCoversheet?xml=/mnt/pdfserve/pdfserve/824617--748028298.xml.] This highly purified product is rich in subtypes ɑ1 and ɑ2, two subtypes which are known to be highly expressed by normal leukocytes. In addition, Multiferon consists of 4 other subtypes namely ɑ8, ɑ10, ɑ14, ɑ21.

What are the major differences between Multiferon (Human multi subtype IFN-ɑ) and recombinant IFN-ɑ.

MultiferonTM- is from Eukaryot origin- Contains multiple subtypes- Contains Glycosylated subtypes

Recombinant IFN-ɑ- is from bacterial origin- contains only one single subtype - No glycosylation
