A Fine Arts graduate who majored in Advertising, Chi graduated from the
University of Santo Tomas and quickly acquired a position as Arts Director in some of the country's most successful creative centers. His previous working engagements include: J. Romero Advertising, Ace Saatchi & Saatchi Manila, and Competitivedge. Meanwhile, various projects and clients he has handled include:PLDT , Petron, Ayala Cebu,Molecules ,Sharp ,Nikon ,Pillsbury ,Dunkin' Donuts ,Nestea , Makro, Ace Hardware, SM Appliance Center, among others.In the year 2003, however, Chi decided to resign from advertising and engage in his true passion which was comedy. Though his workload was diverse and far from mediocre, Chi's decision to leave advertising was part of his plan to conquer the world of Philippine Comedy in the years to come.
Chopsticks - the comic strip
Following his resignation in 2003, Chi sent a sample of his now-famous comic strip, Chopsticks to one of the Philippines' Biggest Dailies, the
Manila Bulletin owned by the Roces Family. Immediately, Chopsticks entered daily circulation as part of the comics section of Bulletin. The first appearance of the said comic strip was on August 1, 2003 inside page two.The daily circulation of Chi's Chopsticks continued for two years. In 2005, his comic became part of the prestigious Manila Bulletin Sunday Colored Comic Section. Chi's works apperared alongside established artist legends,
Roni Santiago andJulius Villanueva .In 2007, Chi contacted big-time publishing house, PSICOM Publishing Inc, and offered exclusive distribution rights to Chopsticks. Upon reaching an agreement, Chi's first comic strip book, titled CHOPSTICKS, was released in June of the same year. Subsequently, it spawned a sequel titled CHOPSTICKS 2: Kung-Fu Mahjong. The launch for the said book is slated for release on September 2008.
According to his latest Chopsticks book, Chi plans to venture into non-fictional writing via his new project, Kwentong Chopsticks. Presently, some of his essays will appear regularly in the interactive humor magazine, Nosebleed. No dates have been announced as to when Kwentong Chopsticks will be released.
Observational Comedy
Besides venturing into comic strips and illustrations to express his humor, Chi has also been involved in Stand up Observational Comedy since 2005. His initial stand up career focused on open mic nights in various Metro Manila clubs like the Piper's Bar. According to Chi, his influences include
Rex Naverete andJoey de Leon .Taken under the wing of veteran comedian, Mike Unson, Chi further developed his point of view comedy skills. On September 30, 2005, Chi had his first professional standup gig at the Conspiracy Bar in Visayas Avenue, Quezon City.
His biggest break came in 2008 when he joined the radio reality show Laugh Out Loud, sponsored by DZMM. He is currently en route to winning the monthly finals of the said show.
Presently, Chi is part of the humor group Comedy Cartel.
