Pax Romana (organization)

Pax Romana - the international federation of Catholic intellectuals, one of the oldest international lay Catholic movement. It was created in two stages: in 1921 IMCS/ [http://www.imcs-miec.org MIEC] (the student movement) and 1947 [http://www.icmica-miic.org ICMICA/MIIC] (academic movement) as a response of Catholic university lecturers and students to the need to build a peaceful world after experience of two world wars.Its name, which refers to the peace existing in the days of Christ, this movement has received in 1921 from Pope Benedict XV.

Board

The Board of Pax Romana consists of a international President, five Vice-Presidents (who are also coordinators for certain continent), the Secretary General and Ecclesial Assistant. The candidate for president must obtain an endorsement of the Holy See.Elections to the Board shall be held during the world congress, which takes place every 4 years. In 2004, it took place in Warsaw, Poland (for the first time in the history of Pax Romana in Poland), while in 2008 in Nairobi, Kenya (for the first time on the African continent).

After his death in November 2005, Jean Nsonjiba Lokenga was elected for this function. Jean Lokenga of Kongo is working as a coordinator of Human Rights Defenders Amnesty International in Kampala, Uganda.International Chaplain: father Antoine Sondag, France, by then director of Secours Catholique - Caritas France.The Secretary-General: Paul Ortega, former director of the UNESCO Center in Basque Country.Vice Presidents:

* Latin America: Irma Marino Vargas,

European Board

Each regional (for each continent) Board is elected for a 4-year term and consists of 7 members of the board and vice president of the given continent, who coordinates the work of the board. Elections are held during the Regional (continental) Assembly, which takes place after every International Congress. In 2004, Congress was held in Poland, in 2008, Kenya.Each regional board is assisted by regional Ecclesial Assistant.

Pax Romana is a worldwide organization, which has its headquarters located in Geneva, Switzerland. Regional coordinations (with office located in the country of regional president's residence) operate on every continent.Pax Romana also works by 6 specialized secretariats:
* SIQS - The International Secretariat of Scientific questions;
* MIJC - The International Secretariat of the Catholic Lawyers;
* SIIAEC - The International Secretariat of the Catholic Engineers, Agronoms and Industrialists;
* SIESC - The International Secretariat of Catholic High School Teachers;
* SIAC - The International Secretariat of Christian Artists;
* Women's vision (the group during the world congress in 2008 acquired the status of the International Secretariat).

Representation

Pax Romana has a consultative status of INGO (International Non-Governmental Organization) at the United Nations and its missions in New York, Paris, Geneva, Vienna. Pax Romana is also recognized as an ICO (International Catholic Organization) accredited with the Vatican Pontifical Council for Lay People and the Secretariat of State.
