Cynewulf of Lindisfarne Bishop of Lindisfarne Church Catholic See Diocese of Lindisfarne In Office 740–780 Predecessor Æthelwald Successor Higbald Personal details Died 783 Cynewulf of Lindisfarne was the Bishop of Lindisfarne from 740 to 780. He resigned the see in 780 and died in 783.[1] It is possible that he was also the Anglo-Saxon poet Cynewulf, who was known to be alive at about the same time.
In 750 Cynewulf was imprisoned by Eadberht of Northumbria[2] for giving sanctuary to Prince Offa during a dynastic clash.
