He represented France at the 2008 Summer Paralympics, winning gold in the 100 metre freestyle event[1] and gold in the 50m freestyle, as well as two silver, in the 50m backstroke and 200m freestyle.[2]
As of 2008, he was the European record holder in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle events, as well as the 50m backstroke.[1]
Smétanine has tetraplegia.[1]
