Heavy rain (meteorology)

Heavy rain (meteorology)

Heavy rain is an intense form of rain that usually falls from thunderstorms, tropical systems, or when atmospheric moisture is sufficient. If heavy rain falls for extended periods of time, flooding can quickly begin. It is known as heavy rain if rainfall rates exceed 7.6 mm (0.31 in.) per hour.

Causes

Heavy rain is common from cumulonimbus clouds due to the fact of the cloud height, allowing the raindrops to grow to a large size and for many to form. In tropical systems, wind blows the rain to the ground at a higher rate. When atmospheric moisture is sufficient, this can also cause the raindrops grow to a large size and many to form.
