Catacombs of London

Catacombs of London

The Catacombs of London are surprisingly extensive, given that much of the city has a very high water table. However, there are several fine catacombs, including the Camden catacombs, an extensive range of passages, constructed in the 19th century. The catacombs were originally used as stables for horses and pit ponies working on the railways. The catacombs also included an underground pool for canal boats.

West Norwood Cemetery also has a system of catacombs, although these are in a poor condition following years of neglect and damage suffered during German bombing raids of World War Two.
