S-type star

S-type star

A star with spectral type S is a late-type giant star (class K5–M) whose spectrum displays bands from zirconium oxide. [p. 77, "Observing Variable Stars", Gerry A. Good, Springer, 2003, ISBN 1852334983.] It may also have features from cyanogen, lithium, technetium, and other fifth-period oxides such as yttrium oxide. Most of these stars are long-period variables. [ [http://www.daviddarling.info/encyclopedia/S/S_star.html S star] , "The Internet Encyclopedia of Science", David Darling.
