- Universal Cyclopædia & Atlas
Universal Cyclopædia & Atlas was published in New York by
D. Appleton & Company .The 1902 edition is now in the public domain.
Appleton's Cyclopædia of American Biography , published between 1887 and 1889, contained several dozen fictitious biographies. The writers for "Appleton's Cyclopedia" were paid by the word, and insufficient editorial control was exerted. The "Cyclopedia" was republished, uncorrected, by theGale Research Company in 1968 and remains on many American public library shelves, in spite of Dr.George Sarton 's warning in 1937: "Beware of the "Appleton's Cyclopedia"!"See also
