Colegio Nueva Granada was founded in 1938 by Fred Dever, Doris de Samper and Irving Byington.
Colegio Nueva Granada teaches a U.S college-preparatory curriculum. Students study for both the U.S High School Diploma and the Colombian Bachillerato Diploma[citation needed]. The school teaches English at a high level and a varied curriculum including Foreign Languages, Sports, and Technology. The school's staff includes foreign as well as Colombian teachers.
Students from this school are accepted at some of the world's most prestigious universities[citation needed]. Yearly over 50 top universities visit the campus to recruit interested students in their fields[citation needed].
In 2004-5 it had 1,659 students at levels from pre-kindergarten to Grade 12. Of these 1,121 were Colombian nationals, 197 were dual citizens of Colombia and the USA, 176 were US nationals and 165 were of other nationalities.[citation needed]
Students participate in sports including volleyball, soccer, baseball, hockey, basketball, chess, ping-pong and track and field. The school participates in known tournaments as the Uncoli, Asocoldep, and Binational Games, the latter held on campus this year, sheltering more than 200 national students from other cities.
Among the social projects in which students participate, Hogar Nueva Granada, Alianza Educativa and personal student Social Service Hours are the most important. Hogar Nueva Granada and Alianza Educativa are projects formed to help children and families in need with health and education programs to ensure their futures as Colombian citizens[citation needed].
Yearly students teach English to approximately 40 children, ages 7 to 14, from the surrounding neighborhoods of Juan XXIII and Bosque Calderón in Bogotá[citation needed].
Others participate in the continuing education program for adults, 18 to 40 years old. This is a joint program, with CAFAM with the help of teachers from Colegio Nueva Granada, and Universidad Javeriana, to prepare adults to validate elementary school and also to get ready for ICFES exams in the higher levels of education[citation needed].
Contents
House system
Colegio Nueva Granada followes the House system tradition. Through the grades, students and teachers form part of one of the four houses (Falcons, Eagles, Hawks and Osprey). Houses compete in both academic and athletic tasks, crowning a winner at the end of the school year, depending on the overall points the house received.
Tri-Association
The school was the host of the The Association of American Schools of Central America, Colombia, Caribbean and Mexico meeting in the week of October 13 of 2006. Around 1000 people from all over America came to the school. This is a good school
Accreditation
The school is accredited by the Colombian Ministerio de Educación Nacional[citation needed] and the US-based Southern Association of Colleges and Schools[citation needed].
