"Rakista" is a weekly Filipino television comedy/musical series that centers on the exploits of a newly-formed rock band composed of five Filipino college students. The show was first telecast on August 14, 2008, and airs Thursday nights (with a rerun on Sunday afternoons) on TV5. It was among the new shows unveiled by the network (formerly known as ABC5) upon its relaunch on 9 August 2008.cite news |author=Marinel Cruz |title=Alternative fare for TV5 |url=http://showbizandstyle.inquirer.net/entertainment/entertainment/view/20080812-154239/Alternative-fare-for-TV5|publisher=Philippine Daily Inquirer |date=2008-08-12 |accessdate=2008-09-04 ]

"Rakista" was created by filmmaker Quark Henares and Diego Castillo, co-founder and guitarist of the rock band "Sandwich". Apart from Henares and Castillo, writers for the show have included music video director King Palisoc, Palanca Award-winning author Yvette Tan and "Philippine Star" columnist Erwin Romulo. Each episode also features a narration by poet and vocalist for "Radioactive Sago Project" Lourd de Veyra. Mikey Amistoso of "Ciudad" and Diego Mapa of "Cambio" are credited with the original music for the series.

Characters

Caloy ("torpe, musikero, good boy") [Descriptions in parentheses are how the characters are described in the opening credits.] : The band's co-founder, his musical skills were honed with the assistance of his elder brother.cite news |author=Philbert Ortiz Dy |title=Behind the Scenes of Rakista |url=http://guides.clickthecity.com/tv/?p=3570 |publisher=ClickTheCity.com |date=2008-09-01 |accessdate=2008-09-04 ] Has a secret crush on CC.

Ted ("wheeler, dealer, chickhunter"): Co-founder of the band with Caloy, his best friend. The band's manager, he pushed for its creation in order to meet girls. Counts Randy Santiago, Rico J. Puno and Hajji Alejandro as his musical heroes.

CC ("cutie, crush ng bayan, artist"): The most popular girl in school. A budding artist whose aspirations are not entirely understood by her social circle. The girlfriend of Sonny and the secret object of affection of Caloy.

Nix ("genius, yabang, gitarista"): The most talented musician in the band, and a veteran of several other bands from which he had quit due to artistic differences. An abrasive personality who finds himself increasingly drawn to Bebe.

Bebe ("bahista, emo, galit sa mundo"): The band's bassist and only female member. Was formerly a member of an all-girl band which dissolved after her bandmates found boyfriends for themselves. Frequently clad in black. Despite the opening credits, insists that she is not emo.

Sonny ("supastah, hearthrob, swim team"): The campus hearthrob and captain of the swim team. The boyfriend of CC.

Sven ("weirdo, outsider, drummer"): The band's drummer and resident eccentric. Somewhat of a loner, but an effusive personality. His drumming abilities do not always jibe with his bandmates, and he nearly quit the band to dedicate his life to "art".

Cast

Critical reception

"Rakista" has been lauded uniquely "Pinoy" style and for its "twisted sense of humor that has never been present in [Philippine] television." Critics have attributed as among the show's influences, Joss Whedon, John Hughes films, "The Adventures of Pete and Pete", and the Michael Winterbottom film "9 Songs".
