Gonzalo de Mendoza (b.
Baeza ,Spain ; d.1558 Asunción ,Paraguay ) was a Spanishconquistador and colonizer.A native of
Andalusia inSpain , he joined his brother Pedro at his new colony ofNew Andalusia in1536 . Together withJuan de Salazar de Espinosa , he founded Nuestra Señora Santa María de la Asunción (Asunción del Paraguay) on15 August ,1537 , which soon became the seat of the colony. Under succeeding governors, he acted as theircaptain andlieutenant , while exploringParaguay andBrazil .He succeeded
Domingo Martínez de Irala as actinggovernor of the renamed Governorate of Rio de la Plata in1556 . During his term, the Ciudad Real del Guayrá was founded byRuy Díaz de Malgarejo at the confluence of thePepirí-Guazú and Paraná rivers. This city received the settlers ofOntiveros when it was abandoned and later grew large enough to briefly become the namesake for thegovernorate of Paraguay.Mendoza was succeeded in his turn by
captain Francisco Ortiz de Vergara in1558 .
