multiplayer video game in which players attempt to accrue the highest number of points (called "reputation") by "hacking " the virtual computer systems of other players and NPC systems. Players are given a series of puzzles to solve pointing them to the location of bettersoftware (distinguished by increasingly higher version numbers) which, in turn, allows the player to access tougher systems and acquire more points. The game developers stress that no real hacking takes place, the site does not condone hacking, and all the events take place on the game's servers.cite web

A user creates an account which gives the user a "very old (133Mhz, 1gb harddisk) computer" with which to begin hacking and gaining points. The player begins by acquiring a password cracking program which is used to hack into other in-game systems. The user acquires in-game
currency by uploading spam-bot software andwarez viruses onto other in-game computers. The player may then trade the currency for faster hardware and more in-game storage space, both allowing the user to gain more financial resources by hacking into more and better defended in-game computer systems.Certain hints are given on various in-game servers that direct the player to upgraded software which may either execute more quickly or may operate on more sophisticated computer systems. The user must solve these puzzles to download the upgraded software to advance to the next "level" of play.
The challenge exists in also preventing the player computer from being hacked by other player characters. This is done by erasing connection logs and preventing the in-game system's
IP address from being listed. When a player's system is hacked, users may elect to either upload a spam-bot virus, a warez-uploader, aDDoS virus, or a more malicious user may elect to delete the harddisk—essentially causing the player to begin anew, however allowing the player to keep her current finances and reputation.Every thirty minutes, the game recalculates the high scores table and ranks the registered players by reputation.
