Anglican Portal St Nicholas Shambles was a mediaeval church in the City of London [ [http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/nra/searches/subjectView.asp?ID=O108183 National archive details] ] situated just north of Newgate Street in what is now King Edward Street [ [http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/B2D329CD-628B-4F84-A435-80EBBF21E44B/0/Leaflet33Listofparishes.pdf Guildhall Library data] ] . First mentioned as "St. Nicholas de Westrnacekaria" ["A Dictionary of London" Harben,H: London, Herbert Jenkins, 1918] , in 1253 Walter de Cantilupe, Bishop of Worcester granted indulgences its parishioners [ [http://www.aim25.ac.uk/cgi-bin/search2?coll_id=5172&inst_id=51 Records of St Nicholas Shambles parish, 1253-1526 (Held at St Bart’s Hospital)] ] . At the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries it was demolished and the parish united with St Sepulchre-without-Newgate [“The Old Churches of London” Cobb,G: London, Batsford, 1942] .
