The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship of 1907 was the 21st edition of Ireland’s premier hurling knockout competition. The championship ran across two years from 1907 to 1908, culminating with the All-Ireland final, held at Dungarvan on 21 June, 1908. The match was contested by Kilkenny, represented by Mooncoin, and Cork, represented by Dungourney, with Kilkenny taking the title by 3-21 to 4-8.

Format

The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was run on a provincial basis as usual. All games were played on a knockout basis whereby once a team lost they were eliminated from the championship. The format for the All-Ireland series of games ran as follows:
* The representatives from the Leinster Championship advanced directly to the first All-Ireland semi-final.
* The winners of the Ulster Championship advanced directly to the first All-Ireland semi-final where they played the Leinster representatives.
* The winners of the Munster Championship advanced directly to the second All-Ireland semi-final.
* The winners of the Connacht Championship advanced directly to the second All-Ireland semi-final where they played the Munster champions.
* The winners of the two All-Ireland semi-finals played each other in the All-Ireland final.

All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship

The All-Ireland series of games were somewhat hampered due to a delay in playing the provincial championship in Leinster. Because of this Dublin, the reigning provincial champions, were nominated by the Leinster Council to represent the province in the All-Ireland semi-final on 15 March, 1908. Dublin, however, were later defeated by Kilkenny in the Leinster final on 24 May, 1908, thus qualifying for the All-Ireland final.

Overview

Sunday 10 May, 1908 was the date of the 1907 All-Ireland senior hurling final between Kilkenny and Cork. It was their first meeting in the championship for the first time since the replayed All-Ireland final of 1905. Kilkenny won on that occasion, the county’s last triumph in the championship decider. Cork hadn’t won the All-Ireland title since 1903 when they defeated London to take the championship.

Match report

The All-Ireland hurling final of 1907 has been described as the greatest exhibition of hurling seen up to that point. The game itself was a classic and became the benchmark by which all subsequent performances were measured. The match referee was the experienced Limerick man M.F. Crowe. He blew the whistle to start the game as a Fr. Dollard of Mooncoin threw in the sliothar to get the game under way in earnest in front of 15,000 spectators. Within seconds of the start the Cork goalmouth was under attack. The first goal came quickly courtesy of a Jimmy Kelly shot on goal. Thus began a scoring fest over the next hour. Kelly scored two more goals over the course of the hour, however, with the game entering the dying minutes both sides were level; Kilkenny 3-11, Cork 4-8. Cork went on two goal hunts in the dying minutes, however, the were repelled every time. The heroes of the game, however, were Kelly and Jack Anthony. Anthony cleared his lines as Kelly raced after the falling sliothar. He hit it first time on the drop as it flew straight over the crossbar for the winning point. With that the game was over and Kilkenny were the champions for the third time in four years with a 3-12 to 4-8 victory.
