John Eliot Howard

John Eliot Howard

John Eliot Howard (born 11 November 1807 in Plaistow, London - died 22 November 1883 in Edmonton, London) was an English chemist and quinologist of the nineteenth century, noted for his pioneering work with the development of quinine. He married Maria Crewdson on 9 September 1830 [http://www.tolliss.com/gedview/individual.php?pid=I1804&ged=Tolliss.ged] .

Howard was a fellow of the Royal Society and a noted author, including scientific titles such as "The Quinology of the East Indian Plantations (1869-1876)" and religious titles including a commentary on the book of Hebrews and histories including "The Island Of The Saints", about the Reformation in Ireland.

Howard was originally a Quaker, but became connected with Christians meeting at the new Brooks Street Meeting House in Tottenham, now Brook Street Chapel, which was founded in 1838-1839 by a number of other Christians including Howard's father, Luke, the 'namer of clouds'. A portrait of the father and son hangs in the National Portrait Gallery [http://images.npg.org.uk/OCimg/weblg/3/1/mw16831.jpg] .
