Li Jun (Water Margin)

Li Jun (Water Margin)

Li Jun(李俊) is a character in the epic Chinese tale the "Water Margin".

Li Jun stood at 8 feet, with thick eyebrows, large eyes, a red face, whiskers like wires, and a loud voice. He was exceptionally skilled in the use of his sword. He was from Luzhou, and worked as a ferryman on the river. He was a good friend of Li Li, Tong Wei and Tong Meng. He was a powerful swimmer and could perform great feats in the water. Thus, he was nicknamed the 'River Dragon' (混江龙).

When Song Jiang was exiled to Jiangzhou, he passed by Jieyang Town. Here, Li Li used drugged wine to knock Song out but Li Jun rescued Song Jiang. Later, Song Jiang offended Mu Hong and Mu Chun by paying Xue Yong for his performance. He boarded Zhang Heng's pirate boat by mistake and Zhang was about to kill Song when Li Jun appeared and rescued Song. Li Jun introduced Song Jiang to all the others and they were shocked to realise Song Jiang's true identity and they immediately asked for forgiveness.

When Song Jiang was almost executed in Jiangzhou, Li Kui and Liangshan heroes stormed the execution ground and rescued Song Jiang. Li Jun and his friends picked the heroes up at the river and ferried them all the way to Liangshan. There, Li Jun joined the Liangshan band.

Li Jun became one of the leaders of the Liangshan navy and 36 Heavenly Chieftains. He was not only good in martial arts but also had guts and wits as well. During the Tian Hu campaign, he suggested using water to flood Taiyuan, and during the Fang La campaign, he dived into the lake and seized Fang La's ships. Then, he sneaked into Suzhou, and act as a spy from within the city. The Liangshan heroes took control of Suzhou easily. Also, he went to Qingxi Prefecture, pretending to surrender to Fang La. He acted as a spy from within and helped the Liangshan heroes conquer Qingxi City, making great contributions.

After Fang La had been defeated, the surviving heroes were on their way back to the capital city to receive their rewards. Li Jun did not want to become an official, so he pretended to be ill. Li Jun and the Tong brothers left and sailed to other distant lands. It was said that Li Jun eventually reached Siam with his companions and became the King of Siam.
