After graduating from the Rose Bruford drama school Buxton worked initially as a speech and drama teacher. She joined the
Royal Shakespeare Company in 1979, where she played principal roles until 1982. Her “memorable...and exceptional” performance of Iphigenia in "The Greeks" and Juliet in "Romeo and Juliet" were particularly notable. [cite web
