ynopsis

The series centered around a 1950s sitcom family, the Nielsens (who were named in reference to the Nielsen Ratings system), who were relocated by the "Sitcom Relocation Program" to 1990s New Jersey suburbia after their fictional series, "Hi Honey, I'm Home", stopped being rerun.

Episodes focused on the Nielsens attempting to adjust to life in a new era while keeping their true identities a secret. The only regular character that knew the family's true identities was Mike Duff (Peter Benson), the son of the Nielsen's next door neighbor. Many episodes featured a guest star, often appearing in-character as their classic role, including Gale Gordon, Jim Nabors, Al Lewis, Eva Gabor and Ann B. Davis.

The Nielsens had a special remote control called the "Turnerizer" (named after Ted Turner, the media mogul who colorized old movies for his networks) which allowed the family to switch between color and black and white. In black and white mode, the entire house and the Nielsens themselves changed to monochrome, while other characters remained in color. The show was recorded at Nickelodeon Studios at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida

Cast and Characters

*Honey Nielsen (Charlotte Booker) - An archetypal 1950s sitcom housewife and mom.
*Lloyd Neilsen (Stephen C. Bradbury) - The bumbling, somewhat clueless dad.
*Babs Neilsen (Julie Benz) - The Neilsen's pretty, popular, and well endowed teenage daughter.
*Chucky Neilsen (Danny Gura) - The Neilsen's chubby and naive younger son.
*Elaine Duff (Susan Cella) - Next door neighbor to the Nielsens and single mom to two sons.
*Mike Duff (Peter Benson) - Elaine Duff's couch potato teenage son who knows the real identities of the Nielsens.
*Sidney "Skunk" Duff (Eric Kushnick) - Elaine's youngest, trouble making son.

In the series' pilot, two different actors were initially cast in two roles and were later recast for subsequent episodes. Actress Dee Hoty was originally cast as Elaine Duff, but replaced by Susan Cella. Future Backstreet Boy A. J. McLean was originally cast as Sidney "Skunk" Duff and was replaced by Eric Kushnick. The pilot was then re-shot with the different actors and aired. The original pilot went unaired until Nickelodeon's 20th anniversary "Best of Nickelodeon" marathon. The original pilot episode aired on Nickelodeon on June 27, 1999. [ [http://www.rugratonline.com/nick20.htm Nickelodeon's 20th Birthday] ]
