Bougainvillean presidential election, 2008

Presidential elections will be held in Bougainville from November 30 to December 12, 2008, with results expected on December 22. [ [http://www.rnzi.com/pages/news.php?op=read&id=42340 "Dates for Bougainville Presidential election released"] , Radio New Zealand International, October 3, 2008] Voters will elect the new President of the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, following the death of President Joseph Kabui while in office, on June 7.

The potential resumption of controversial mining activities, which were at the root of Bougainville's civil war in the 1990s, is reportedly a key issue in this election.
